James Macdonald was born in White Plains, New York, on July 18, 1803, the son of Scottish immigrant Dr. Archibald Macdonald (1745-1813) and Flora Macdonald (1765-1835). He graduated from the College of Physicians and Surgeons (now part of Columbia University) in 1825. He was a physician for the Bloomingdale Asylum in New York City from 1825-1830 and 1832-1837.
